Back on Track
Back on TrackIn late 2014, elite athlete Thomas Van Der Plaetsen was diagnosed with cancer. Thomas collaborated with Maria Middelares General Hospital, where he was treated and monitored, to set up the 'Back on Track’ fund. St Vincent General Hospital in Deinze also decided to help throw its weight behind this initiative.
The Foundation aims to reduce the burden of cancer treatment as much as possible by supporting patients through additional psychosocial support, rehabilitation programmes and other initiatives.
Hospital for Hospital:
Hospital for Hospital:Our organisation supports the 'Hospital for Hospital' project of the NGO Memisa. This organisation aims to establish high-quality, long-term basic healthcare, chiefly in Central and West Africa and India. The initiative closely aligns with our main motivation: to stand in solidarity with the patients in our hospital and to provide them with vital care, applying the same to the wider social context and even beyond our national borders.

Maria Middelares General Hospital has entered into a partnership with a hospital in Katako-Kombe (Democratic Republic of Congo). Thanks in part to our support, this hospital is booming. It has now become the pilot hospital for the entire region and is developing into a training centre for physicians and midwives.

Book about and for Katako-Kombe
Rik Neirynck worked as an occupational therapist at Maria Middelares Medical Centre for 35 years and travelled to Katako-Kombe eight times. In his diary titled 'Ils vont là où même les moustiques sont sauvages' or ‘To where the mosquitos are still wild’, he tells about his experiences as technical volunteer in the healthcare field. Rik provides information that is rarely included in descriptions of healthcare in developing nations. The book is written in Dutch, it is only the title that is in French. The profits go to Katako-Kombe.
Since 2005, St Vincent General Hospital in Deinze has been partnering with Kasongo-Lunda, a Congolese health zone. As well as helping financially, we want to make a significant local contribution. Our focus is on the needs of pregnant mothers and their babies, as well as ensuring basic health care for all patients.

Scharnier (non-profit)
Scharnier (non-profit)The non-profit organisation Scharnier is the link - hinge - between the dialysis team, the kidney patient (i.e. haemodialysis patients, peritoneal kidney patients and transplant recipients) and the family/environment. Of course, the Dialysis Department remains the patients’ home base where they can always go, with or without their family.
By organising a variety of activities, Scharnier aims to support and enhance solidarity between kidney disease patients, family members and the dialysis team.
