Innovative treatment on our Urology Department

For several months, an innovative treatment with an Optilume balloon has been offered at Maria Middelares. Dr Marjan Waterloos focuses on this procedure that is performed on men with an urethral constriction. The specific feature of this innovative technology is the combination of

• : balloon dilation, a procedure in which a thin balloon is inserted into the urethra. The balloon is inflated at the site of the narrowing, causing the constricted urethra to stretch and widen.
• A paclitaxel coating: a layer of medication on the balloon to prevent the formation of scar tissue and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

This treatment is currently only available in Belgium at Maria Middelares. General Hospital.
