New heart surgery technique
In May, a new device was installed at our hospital in a cardiac patient on the ICU.
The Impella system employs technology that partially takes over the heart’s pumping function. The small pump is installed in the left half of the heart via an artery in the groin. This gives the heart’s left ventricle a bit more rest and allows the patient's heart tissue to recover better.
This device is the result of an innovative collaboration between our cardiologists, staff from the cardiac catheterisation service, perfusionists, intensivists and nurses from the Intensive Care Department.
