PMOC: a centre of expertise for children with obesity

Ghent - Maria Middelares General Hospital

At the end of 2023, Maria Middelares General Hospital received accreditation for its PMOC (paediatric multidisciplinary obesity centre) from the NIHDI (National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance). Thanks to this accreditation, the Paediatrics Department can now also serve as an centre of expertise for the care of children and adolescents (ages 2 - 17) with obesity (overweight). This makes Maria Middelares General Hospital one of the 25 accredited organisations working with a multidisciplinary team to treat obesity in children.

In each case, after referral from and in close consultation with the GP, the paediatricians develop individually tailored programmes for the patients. They create this programme in close collaboration with psychologists, dietitians, social workers and physical therapists.

After a multidisciplinary intake, the team will propose a treatment plan to the child and parents, after which they will regularly visit the Ghent-Bruges Medical Centre for further follow-up in education.

Within the centre of expertise, we collaborate with various disciplines to provide personalised therapy for each patient in order to choose the best path towards better health.
