Reading together connects patients

In December 2024, reading sessions took place for the first time in our hospitals. Patients came together, read texts and shared emotions and experiences.

The reading sessions took place as part of the 'Reading Together' project of the non-profit association Het Lezerscollectief. Some of our volunteers were trained as reading companions for this purpose.

Talking about literature with fellow patients has a binding effect, is good for self-image and encourages self-reflection and debate. Stories and poems have a healing effect and can be the starting point of a warm conversation. A valuable project that also fits within 'dementia-friendly hospital'. Currently, the project is already running in the geriatrics and rehabilitation departments at AZ Sint-Vincentius Deinze. In the coming months, we will further develop 'Reading Together'.
