Urologists offer innovative REZUM steam therapy for urinary problems
A typical old-age phenomenon is benign growth of the prostate gland (adenoma) or ‘benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)’. As soon as the prostate reaches a certain volume, it causes an obstruction (restriction or blockage) at the bladder outlet, which leads to typical urinary symptoms (reduced stream, difficult and/or frequent urination, during the day as well as at night).
These symptoms can usually be temporarily remedied with medication. Sometimes, the symptoms become too severe, necessitating surgical treatment. The impact on sexual function, such as not being able to ejaculate or fewer erections, keeps young patients in particular from having this procedure performed. REZUM steam therapy is an innovative, minimally invasive technique that can be implemented in case of benign prostate growth. This treatment is indicated:
- for urinary symptoms that respond insufficiently to medication;
- as an alternative to long-term medication use;
- for urinary retention (not emptying your bladder completely);
- for patients who would like to continue to ejaculate;
- for high-risk patients taking blood thinner medications;
- prostate volumes between 30 and 80 grams.
