Symptoms

  • Disinhibition
  • Busy, moves and talks a lot
  • Raced thinking, strong association, flight of ideas
  • Sleep disorder/no or very little sleep
  • Irritated or agitated mood
  • Excessive self-esteem
  • No self-criticism
  • Fanciful ideas
  • Impulsive behaviour
  • Feeling really well, goes in overdrive
  • Sometimes sexually disinhibited
  • Sometimes paranoia, sometimes psychosis

Causes

  • Predisposition, heredity
  • Fewer psychological factors
  • Sleep disorder in combination with extra stress
  • Sometimes because of paradoxal reaction, for example in case of death
  • Somatic causes
  • Antidepressants
  • Drugs or alcohol

Treatment

There are several treatment options, including mood stabilisers (e.g. Lithium), antipsychotics or benzodiazepines.
