Vitreous haemorrhage
Symptoms and causes
Symptoms and causesWhat is it?
In the eye, the entire space between the lens and the retina is filled with vitreous. With age, the composition of the vitreous gradually changes so that, at some point, it can detach from the retina (posterior vitreous detachment). During this process, the vitreous can pull too hard on a blood vessel, resulting in (vitreous) bleeding. This suddenly reduces visual acuity.
Other causes can also be at the basis of a vitreous haemorrhage such as diabetes, thrombosis, the wet form of macular degeneration...
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis and treatmentDiagnosis
The physician will dilate the pupil as much as possible to look into the eye. This is done with the aid of eye drops. The physician will also perform an ultrasound examination to assess the vitreous and the retina.
Treatment
More information about the treatment can be found on the vitrectomy page.
