Symptoms and causesMale hormone imbalance disorders involve a deficiency of the male hormone (testosterone). This deficiency may originate in two different locations:
- in the testes (primary male hormone imbalance disorder or hypergonadotropic hypogonadism)
- in the pituitary gland (secondary male hormone imbalance disorder or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism)
The symptoms in male hormone imbalance disorders include fatigue, increased sweating, reduced muscle strength, reduced libido (desire for sex), erectile dysfunction, depressive symptoms and reduced body hair.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis and treatmentTreatment of male hormone imbalance disorders usually includes a testicular examination.
Sometimes, an additional ultrasound of the testes or an MRI scan of the pituitary gland is necessary.
Depending on the cause, hypogonadism can be treated with medication (taken orally or injected).
