Symptoms and causes

An inguinal hernia in a child is a disturbance of the normal development of the inguinal structures.

Diagnosis and treatment

Inguinal herniae in children are entirely different from inguinal herniae in adults. Children do not develop weakness in their abdominal wall; consequently, there is no need to place a mesh to repair the fracture.

Binding the connection between the groin and the peritoneum is a sufficient treatment.

Contrary to inguinal hernia in adults, a watchful waiting approach is not recommended, because the risk of entanglement with constriction is significantly higher than in adults.
