Pulmonary infection

Pneumonia is a serious infection that affects the alveoli (air sacs) and causes issues with breathing.

It is usually caused by bacteria, viruses or other micro-organisms entering the lungs.

People with pneumonia may experience a high fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue.

There are different types of pneumonia, including viral and bacterial forms. Treatment will vary depending on the type.

Doctors can diagnose pneumonia by observing a patient’s symptoms, performing a physical examination and requesting additional examinations, such as an X-ray or a scan.

Some people with severe pneumonia may need to be hospitalised for treatment.

Depending on the cause, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics or antiviral drugs to treat the infection. Getting plenty of rest and drinking sufficient water is important to help your body recover.

Washing your hands, avoiding sick people and getting your vaccinations can prevent pneumonia from developing.
