Micropenis

Symptoms and causes

Symptoms and causes

What is it?

In some children, the development of the penis is delayed. One refers to a micropenis when the penis deviates 2.5 standard deviations from the normal penis length for that age.

Which factors influence a micropenis?

When no hormonal abnormalities can be found, the reason for a micropenis is completely unknown.

When the cause is hormonal:

  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (insufficient GNRH excretion)
  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (insufficient testosterone production in the testicle)

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis and treatment

How is the diagnosis determined?

The doctor measures the penis and examines the size of the testicles. He or she will also request a hormonal test.

Treatment

In rare cases, the prescription of certain hormones may be appropriate. These hormones stimulate the development of the penis.
