Symptoms and causes

What is it?

Osteoporosis (porous bone)

In osteoporosis, the bone density is reduced, which decreases the strength of the bones and increases the risk of fractures (e.g. the spinal column, hip, wrist, upper arm and the pelvis).

Osteomalacia (softened bones)

In osteomalacia, there is not only a shortage of calcium in the bone, but also an additional softening and weakness in the remaining bone tissue. This often leads to chronic bone pain and an increase in fractures. The cause is usually a significant vitamin D deficiency. Rare genetic causes can also be the cause. Extensive testing is often required, including blood tests, urine analysis and sometimes genetic and tissue tests.
