Achilles tendon pain

Symptoms and causes

Symptoms and causes

The cause of Achilles tendon pain often lies in the shortening of the tendon and/or a sudden increase in exertion or weight gain. For Achilles tendon pain, we need to differentiate between a problem in the middle of the tendon or more towards where the tendon attaches to the heel. There is usually a local swelling of the Achilles tendon (tendinosis).

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis and treatment

Stretching exercises (whether or not eccentric) and applying ice are always beneficial. If this does not improve the symptoms, a clinical examination is required. An MRI scan may aid in determining the correct diagnosis. Ultrasound imaging may also be an option.
