Symptoms and causes

An abscess is a pus-filled cavity. The cavity did not exist beforehand.

Usually, skin abscesses arise from an inflamed hair follicle cyst (a pre-existing skin swelling filled with sebum). They can also be caused by direct bacterial infection of the skin.

Bacteria are often present in the abscess cavity. The bacterial infection causes tissue damage, redness, swelling, pain, tissue death and malodorous pus.

Pus removal is recommended. This can be be performed during consultations.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin condition that involves abscesses. Abscesses can then lead to the formation of tunnels (fistulas) or persistent cavities (sinus).
