Symptoms and causesWhat is it?
Diseases in which liver cells or Küpffer cells accumulate abnormal amounts of chemicals can also compromise liver function over the years. Fat accumulation (steatosis) can be caused by prolonged alcohol consumption, but also by obesity (NAFLD). The condition whereby the body absorbs too much iron from the diet and stores it abnormally in the liver can also be detected and treated. This iron accumulation disease or ‘haemochromatosis’ is usually hereditary and passed on. Genetic research is already reliably available.
