Multidisciplinary collaboration

The Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery Department works in a multidisciplinary collaboration with other physicians and services. The expertise of the Stomatology Department is indicated for the treatment of certain disorders or interventions.

The dentist plays a central role in the detection of oral diseases. During an annual oral examination, problems can be discussed and if necessary the dentist will refer you to another specialist for additional exams. There is close communication between the dentist and the oral surgeon.

The GP is the key figure in primary care. He or she is an important link between the patient and the oral surgeon, and will refer to specialists for additional advice.

Certain oncological treatments first require an oral examination in order to avoid problems later. Oncology medication can reduce immunity and cause infection flare ups in the mouth.

Bacteria from the mouth can pose a risk to heart patients. These germs can spread through the bloodstream and attach themselves to damaged heart valves. The cardiologist will discuss this with you and refer you to a specialist if necessary.

Patients who qualify for an organ transplant are often prescribed an oral examination. Transplantation patients receive medication that suppresses their immunity in order to prevent organ rejection. A patient should be infection free before the start of the treatment.

Due to the proximity of the tooth roots and the maxillary sinus, infections of the teeth can sometimes cause sinusitis symptoms. Other conditions, such as oral cancer, are also dealt with in consultation and cooperation with the ENT specialist.
