The geriatrics departments at St Vincent General Hospital in Deinze and Maria Middelares General Hospital operate as one entity. Geriatric specialists Dr Patrick Desimpelaere, Dr Kathleen De Wilde, Dr Céline Bultynck, Dr Nathalie Gillard and Dr Gaëlle Moerman visit patients on the Geriatric Department at Maria Middelares General Hospital in Ghent, while Dr Mathias Demuynck and Dr Joke De Mey see patients on the Geriatric Department at St Vincent General Hospital in Deinze. All of the physicians work across the hospitals during on-call shifts and in the event of a physician's absence. This ensure the Geriatrics Department’s continuity of care at both hospitals, with a geriatric specialist available day and night!

We are happy to share our expertise with the colleagues of the future. Maria Middelares General Hospital also serves as a training site for internal medicine residents and geriatrics residents. In addition, trainee physicians also regularly complete internships in our hospital (both at Maria Middelares General Hospital and St Vincent General Hospital in Deinze).

The geriatric specialists are also supported by an interdisciplinary team consisting of nurses, caregivers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians, psychologists, the Palliative Support Team, Social Services and students on a paramedical training programme. From their respective specialties, they work together on the individual and overarching needs of the elderly patient.

To ensure the optimal functioning of the department, our paramedical and non-paramedical team are also indispensable: the Pastoral Care Services staff, personnel logistics, administrative and technical staff, as well as the cleaning service. Finally, we rely daily on our passionate volunteers, who offer their help wherever it is needed and/or wanted.
