General information

Hernia surgeries are performed at the Maria Middelares General Hospital.

  • You will receive a welcome leaflet before your admission and stay. The leaflet will provide you with specific information such as what you need to bring to the hospital, where you need to check in, etc.
  • Make sure to read the ‘Finding out more about anaesthesia’ leaflet too. Find more information about the anaesthetic you will receive here. The booklet also contains important documents that you should fill out beforehand and bring with you to your admission.

Do you have any other questions? Contact our staff. They are happy to help you.

When the surgery date is set, it is usually not possible to provide you with the exact time.

The day before admission, the hospital’s Admission Department will notify you and give you more information about being sober (eating and drinking). Please be ready for a telephone call that afternoon.

Can I choose my room type?

Can I choose my room type?

You have the options for a one-person room or a two-person room. The choice of room does not affect the quality of care. The hospital asks for your understanding if we, due to a lack of space, cannot immediately give you the room you requested.

The Maria Middelares Hernia Centre in Ghent charges the official RIZIV rates. In addition to the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fee, there will be charges for the general costs for the hospital admission and the use of materials such as mesh. A supplement will also be charged if a single room is chosen.

You can find more information about the cost and invoice via the button below.

When may I leave the hospital?

When may I leave the hospital?

The right discharge time is determined together with the attending physician.

Things to think about:

  • Please let the nurses know when you are discharged.
  • You will always be given a hospitalisation report for your GP.
  • Of course, your GP will also be notified about the progress of your admission as soon as possible.
  • You will also be given a date for the check-up appointment with the surgeon.
  • If self-dissolving (i.e. resorbable) sutures are used during surgery, they should not be removed. Otherwise the GP should remove the sutures approximately ten days afterwards. For that, you need to make an appointment.
  • Be sure to keep all of the medical documents provided to you upon your discharge.
  • Strictly follow the advice of your attending physician.

Do not hesitate to ask for an explanation if some things are not clear.
