Anaesthesia for a total knee or hip replacement

Spinal anaesthesia is the standard anaesthesia for these procedures. It is comparable to epidural anaesthesia in terms of administration and technique. Medication is injected into the lower back, which completely numbs the lower half of the body. This provides fast and effective pain relief. Depending on the patient's wishes, the decision can be made about whether or not to stay awake during the procedure.
