Circumcision

A circumcision is a surgical procedure where the entire foreskin of the penis is removed. The remaining skin of the penis is attached to a ridge just beneath the glans. This is done using dissolvable sutures that do not need to be removed. The procedure is preferably performed after the age of 2.

This operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately twenty minutes.

After the procedure

After the operation, your son will remain in the recovery room for one to one-and-a-half hours. Your child will need to remain in the day hospital for a few hours. Before going home, the paraffin impregnated gauze and compression bandage are removed. Bleeding may occur. This is generally solved by applying a new bandage to the penis. After a few hours, the bandage is removed by soaking it in tepid water. A simple painkiller is sufficient to alleviate the pain.

After the operation, your son may take brief baths or showers every day. It is recommended that long baths or swimming are avoided for some time. It is advisable to stop your son from participating in sports or gymnastics for ten days. There is no objection whatsoever to your son returning to school when you think he is able to.

Erosion on the glans may occur as a result of rubbing of the nappies or underwear. It may take two to three weeks to fully heal. The glans is best disinfected with Isobetadine. Afterwards, Terramycin eye ointment is applied twice daily.
