Exercise by Referral

In addition to their work as physical therapists,Anouk Windey and Vanessa Roose are 'Bewegen Op Verwijzing' (Exercise by Referral) coaches at the Ghent-Bruges Medical Centre.

Exercise by Referral is a project that has been launched by the Flemish Institute for Healthy Living in partnership with several Flemish cities. The initiative helps people take steps towards a more active lifestyle. Through consultations, the coaches create a personalised exercise plan with concrete exercise goals. These can be movements from everyday life as well as a high- or low-intensity sports. The coaches also provide professional guidance, such as motivation, support and help where necessary. On top of that, there are counselling sessions for people who want to exercise more or practice more sports, but have no idea what is available in their area.

Anyone who wants help from a Exercise by Referral coach needs a referral letter. Initially, this letter had to be provided by a GP. Now, however, other care professionals can provide referrals, such as podiatrists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists, midwives and nurses. Referrals can be made easily through the Healthy Living website or with a paper referral letter.

The program is aimed at everyone who does not meet the exercise recommendations or is too sedentary. The goal is to create a specific and sustainable exercise plan.
