Mastectomy
What is it?
A mastectomy involves the removal of all mammary glands, the overlying skin and the nipple. Because the mammary gland extends into the underarm area, this results in a flat chest wall with a horizontal scar. A mastectomy is always performed under general anaesthetic. After the operation, a tube (drain) is placed to drain off any blood and wound exudate (discharge), which generally remains in place for a few days.
Sometimes, radiation is not necessary after a mastectomy.
