Upper jaw expansion
- When? If the upper jaw is too narrow in relation to the lower jaw, the teeth in the upper jaw cannot be aligned correctly with braces. In such cases, it may be necessary to widen the upper jaw surgically. This technique is termed Transpalatal Distraction (TPD).
- What is it? The growth seams (sutures) between the upper jaw and the rest of the skull and through the middle of the upper jaw are disconnected. The surgeon also places an expansion screw in the palate. During the weeks following surgery, the upper jaw is gradually widened by turning the screw each day.
- How? The entire procedure is performed through the mouth; therefore, it does not leave any facial scars.
