Gynaecological ultrasound examination

What is it?

What is it?

Ultrasound imaging is a technique to visualise the bodily organs. Gynaecological ultrasound imaging is usually performed vaginally. The gynaecologist introduces a transducer into the vagina and places it against the cervix. This allows for good visualisation of the uterus and ovaries so that any potential abnormalities can be detected.

This examination is also used to monitor patients who have fertility problems and during the first trimester of pregnancy. The examination uses sound waves and is not harmful to the patient or foetus.
