Oesophageal pressure test

Oesophageal manometry is the most sophisticated test to check the oesophageal function. The examination is very safe and is usually well tolerated.

The test is also recommended for patients considering anti-reflux surgery. Sometimes, the test is also conducted for patients who have chest pain and a regular heart examination.

Preparation

• You will undergo the test as an outpatient (so without hospital admission).
• You will need to fast (no eating or drinking for at least six hours).
• Check in using your identity card. Follow any further instructions on the ticket you receive at the e-kiosk.

Process

• One nostril is numbed using Xylocaine.
• The manometric scope is inserted into the stomach through the nose. The patient is prompted by the physician to drink sips of water.

Temporary gagging reflexes may occur while the scope is being inserted. In very rare instances, brief nosebleeds may occur that generally stop by themselves.
