Open abdominal surgery

The abdomen is opened using an incision - usually a long, transverse incision (bikini incision). Sometimes, if necessary, a vertical incision is used.

An open abdomen operation is only used if the procedure cannot be administered laparoscopically. This includes, for example, removing a large uterus or operations for cancer.
