Labia reduction

In some women, the inner (‘minora') labia may be much larger than the outer (‘majora') labia. If this causes these labia minora to protrude too much, it can cause a lot of physical and psychological discomfort during intimate relations, sports activities (such as cycling) or when wearing tight clothing. Given the intimate and delicate nature of this condition, it is often not easy to discuss it with a physician. Labia corrections are discussed in complete discretion and are performed on a regular basis.

What does a labia reduction involve?

Labia corrections are performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure takes an hour. A plastic surgery technique is used to remove the excess labia skin - mainly on the inside - while preserving the delicate nerve structures. This technique also avoids scarring around the labia, so intimate relations are completely pain-free in the long term. The edges of the wound are sealed with absorbable sutures. The procedure does not require an overnight hospital stay (a day hospital).

What should I pay attention to after a labia correction?

What should I pay attention to after a labia correction?

Showering after surgery is allowed and is an important aspect of post-operative care. A simple absorbent dressing (panty liner) will suffice for the first two weeks. Sports and sexual intercourse are best avoided for six weeks. Standard painkillers may be necessary during the first week after surgery.

Are there any possible complications of labia reduction?

Are there any possible complications of labia reduction?

Post-operative bleeding is a rare complication of labia correction. Resting as well as applying ice after surgery will reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding.

Wound separation can occur if post-operative wound-care instructions are not followed. With proper wound care, this will usually heal spontaneously without additional scarring.

A properly performed labia reduction has no long-term negative effects.

What results can I expect?

What results can I expect?

A labia reduction ensures that the inner labia are positioned within the outer labia, are less noticeable and do not cause discomfort during intercourse, exercising or wearing tight clothing. Labia reduction restores a woman's self-confidence, which is often affected by this delicate issue. The scars from this procedure are nearly invisible.

Will a labia reduction be reimbursed?
