Contrast swallow

In a contrast swallow, you drink contrast fluid under X-ray to map the transition from the oesophagus to the stomach.

A contrast swallow allows for the identification of a diaphragmatic hernia and the assessment of its size.
In addition, passage problems or reflux of contrast into the oesophagus can be determined.
The length of the oesophagus can be measured as well, which is important when surgical treatment is considered.
