Christof Vulsteke graduated as a doctor from the Catholic University of Leuven in 2007. He subsequently started his specialisation training in internal diseases and further subspecialised in medical oncology at UZ Gasthuisberg Leuven in 2010. He obtained the highest academic title (PhD) at the Antwerp Doctoral School (University of Antwerp) with the thesis entitled 'the impact of genetic variability on chemotherapy induced toxicity and outcome in early breast cancer patients'.
Christof Vulsteke heads the medical oncology clinical trial service of the Integrated Cancer Centre Ghent (IKG) and has been principal investigator of more than 70 international clinical trials. A clinical trial investigates the best new treatment for a patient. Patients who opt for a clinical trial receive the most advanced cancer treatment, often several years before it becomes generally available. Together with an extensive team of study coordinators/study nurses and physician researchers, he built international expertise in the treatment of bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine (neck) cancer. This led to more than 100 publications in international journals including several 'practice changing results' in prestigious scientific journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology and Annals of Oncology.
Prof Christof Vulsteke is head of the Integrated Cancer Centre Ghent (IKG), the clinical study service medical oncology and visiting professor at the University of Antwerp (Centre for Oncological Research).
